Gallagher: We can’t eliminate systemic racism until we acknowledge our own biases

A couple of years ago, my wife and I listened to a talk by one of our favorite authors, a Nigerian woman who divides her time between the United States and Nigeria. After describing numerous incidents of racism she has experienced in the U.S., she said that there is no racism in Nigeria, though her writings allude not just to discrimination but to grotesque violence perpetrated by some groups of Nigerians against others — discrimination based on religion, tribe or clan and even skin color. While the author doesn’t see racism in Nigeria, I expect you would get a different assessment from these victims of discrimination and violence based on religion, tribe and skin color. (Cap Gazette)
