EDITORIAL: A Maryland judge who merits election

A race taking place in Howard County is a good example of why Maryland law on judgeships needs changing. There is an excellent sitting circuit court judge, John Kuchno, well qualified and carefully vetted. Yet he is facing a stiff challenge from a less qualified attorney who was once passed over for appointment to a judgeship and who has made no convincing argument for his own candidacy. Two conclusions can be drawn: Voters should reelect Judge Kuchno; and this winter, the General Assembly should take long-overdue action to ensure that merit, not political whim, determines who serves on this important court.
