141st Preakness Stakes Notes - May 11, 2016

Preakness-Bound Nyquist Slated to Go to Track 8:30 a.m. Wednesday BALTIMORE – Preakness-bound Nyquist, the emphatic winner of last Saturday’s Kentucky Derby (G1), has settled in well at Pimlico Race Course and is scheduled to visit the racetrack at Old Hilltop 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Jack Sisterson, assistant to trainer Doug O’Neill, said that the unbeaten colt owned by Reddam Racing LLC, had a quiet Tuesday morning while walking the shedrow at Barn D, which is adjacent to the Preakness Stakes Barn on the Pimlico backstretch. Nyquist and six other O’Neill runners shipped from Kentucky to Baltimore Monday afternoon and are stabled in the same barn that O’Neill used in 2012, when Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another won the Preakness (G1). Sisterson said Land Over Sea, quite possibly the headliner in the Black-Eyed Susan (G2) on Friday, May 20, is slated to follow Nyquist to the racetrack at 9 a.m. Wednesday.... Continue reading

Richard J. Cross, III: Of Hogan, Negan, and the Politics of The Walking Dead

Image Source: Office of the Governor of MarylandRecently I have been thinking about the controversial season finale of a long-running televised drama. In the show’s final moments, a group of protagonists are confronted by a lethal new nemesis. Self-righteous and buoyed by past wins against morally inferior adversaries, this band of heroes lives behind the walls of a sheltered city. The nemesis is a charismatic interloper who wields a baseball bat as a symbol of his power. His ability to communicate helped him build his own rival army of followers not beholden to the status quo. Attempts by the protagonists to defeat him using proven methods have failed, leaving them frustrated by, and ultimately subjugated to, his authority. Just to avoid any confusion…no, I am not talking about The Walking Dead.... Continue reading

Fmr. Delegate John Olszewski, Jr.: Protect Fantasy Sports in Maryland

In 2012, the Maryland General Assembly passed legislation clarifying that participating in fantasy sports online was not gambling. I sponsored that legislation because I believe that fantasy sports are games that require more skill than those categorized as commercial gaming. At the time, Maryland was one of only a handful of states where residents were prohibited from winning any type of prize in fantasy contests. Our legislation mirrored language adopted by Congress in 2006 that specifically exempted fantasy sports from a national online gambling ban on the grounds that they require a higher level of skill, rather than relying entirely on the random outcome of pulling a slot lever or throwing a pair of dice. Today, there are more than 900,000 fantasy players in our state alone – representing nearly 1 out of every 5 adults in Maryland. I too – a devoted Ravens and Orioles fan – occasionally participate. To be... Continue reading
