Baltimore will be playing host to the U.S. Conference of Mayors next June, giving the city a huge opportunity to sell itself -- and its tourism options -- to the more than 1,300 leaders from America's largest cities expected to visit.

“I am excited that Baltimore is hosting the largest meeting of national political leaders Maryland has ever seen,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in a statement released last week after the city's first conference host committee meeting. “It is my goal that Baltimore will be the best host city the U.S. Conference of Mayors has ever had!”

Leading the host committee is Constellation President and CEO Mayor Shattuck, who will oversee the securing of sponsorships and development of a strategic plan to help sell the city to the conference's visitors.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead such an esteemed group of business and civic leaders to shine the nation’s spotlight on Baltimore,” Shattuck said. “It is our hope the entire community will support the Mayor as she represents the City on such a prestigious stage.”

City officials announced last week that the theme of the event will be "Oh Say Can You See Baltimore."

To launch the the year-long promotion of the conference, the city put together a video with the Mayor talking about Baltimore, set to a new rendition of the Star Spangled Banner performed by Baltimore-native Mario (featuring Marvin Gaye). Gaye's 1983 NBA All-Star Game performance of the national anthem helped inspire the song.
